Located at an altitude of 12465 feet (3800 meters) it is the largest town in Spiti Valley and is the administrative headquarters of the valley. Kaza is located on the banks of river Spiti and is surrounded by snow covered mountains. It is a barren landscape with occasional patch of green and is a photographer’s delight. The town can act as a base camp for many day excursions specially for people who do not want to stay at off-beat places. Some of the places one can visit from Kaza are Kye Monastery, Hikkin Village, Komic Village, Langza Village. Lalung Monastery, Dhankar Monastery and Tabo Monastery. There are a number of mid level hotels and home stay available for tourists. The only petrol pump of the region is located here. It also has hotels home stays banks ATM’s good café’s and eating out places.

One can reach Kaza from Manali, it is 137 Kms and takes full days drive. One should try to leave Manali between 5-6 am in the morning. From Manali one can travel only after the Rohtang pass opens to traffic. Alternately one can drive to Kaza from Shimla. It is 420 Kms and one needs to take one or 2 night halts on the way. This route is open round the year but can close temporarily due to avalanches and heavy snowfall during winter months. Best months to visit Kaza are from June to October.
